OCP AIMS Platform: Key Deadlines and FAQs
This document clarifies the critical deadlines and compliance requirements for the new AIMS (Assurance and Improvement in Medication Safety) platform, as set by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP).
January 1, 2027: Each pharmacy in Ontario will be required to have a medication incident reporting platform in place capable of submitting the required data to the National Incident Data Repository for Community Pharmacies (NIDR). Pharmapod already seamlessly integrates with NIDR in multiple other provinces across Canada. Other changes to the AIMS program include:
- mandatory unique logins for registered pharmacy staff (pharmacists and pharmacy technicians) at their primary place of practice (with the exception of relief or occasional staff)
- completion of a safety self-assessment (SSA) at least once every 2 years
- continuous quality improvement (or safety) meetings at least once every quarter
There are several benefits to acting now. Below are a few:
- While pharmacies have until 2027 to have a platform in place, the expectation to maintain incident reports and complete the Pharmacy Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) remains. In the event of an inspection or complaint, your pharmacy may need to provide these reports. Contracting independently with Pharmapod (effective January 1, 2026) would ensure your pharmacy would be able to provide any requested documents as you currently do.Â
- Staying with Pharmapod offers continuity in reporting incidents and good catches, continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities, key analytics for historical data, and building a culture of safety within your pharmacy.
- Staying with Pharmapod preserves your historical data for both incident reporting and PSSA completion.Â
- Pharmapod has extensive experience integrating with ISMP/NIDR across multiple Canadian provinces, allowing us to submit the required data on your behalf at the required time. Pharmapod is used by 70% of pharmacies across Canada. Pharmapod is used by many organizations in the USA, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Yes. The transition to an independent subscription is designed for total continuity, additional features, and more localized control. Your current workflow remains undisrupted, and all existing data is fully preserved. You will not need to maintain and store manual records, and your access to ongoing education via RxBriefcase continues uninterrupted. Most importantly, as an independent subscriber, you gain direct control over your experience—unlocking exclusive features like Insights Pro Analytics, automated notifications, and advanced account customizations previously unavailable under the prior subscription. Additional communication will be coming soon to those who enroll on how to leverage these features and to ensure each pharmacy is set up to best meet its operational needs.
No. The OCP will not continue to pay for the platform on behalf of pharmacies. The last covered date is December 31, 2025. Each pharmacy is responsible for selecting, enrolling, and paying for its chosen platform by the January 1, 2027 deadline.
Waiting until late 2026 creates significant risk:
- Service Interruption: You risk being without a mandatory incident reporting platform, which could result in maintaining manual incident reports betweenJanuary 1, 2026, and January 1, 2027.
- Compliance Risk: You risk not being able to easily produce the necessary digital documents in the event of an inspection or complaint investigation.
- Stressful Integration: You will need additional time for staff training, platform integration, and resolving unexpected issues, which increases the risk of operational disruption. Continuing with Pharmapod provides a consistent process for incident reporting with no disruptions to your staff.
Not necessarily. However, OCP currently requires all pharmacies to maintain an active Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process. Enrolling in Pharmapod before January 2026 is the most reliable and transparent way to demonstrate compliance with both the current and future expectations of the AIMS Program and its CQI requirements.
Pharmapod cannot speak on behalf of OCP or the AIMS program. Information is available on the OCP’s website under Changes to the Assurance and Improvement in Medication Safety (AIMS) Program.
